You've Got Mail
"You've Got Mail" the sound of America Online. When I hear this now i'm annoyed by it but I can remeber a time where I used to run home and sign on to AOL to check my mail or to see who was online. When I was younger I loved getting mail from people whether I knew them or not but when I was growing up I can't recall a time where I've gotten a random e-mail from someone that I didn't know and kept in contact with them. Over the years AOL has progressed and has added many features to entice us into using that e-mail system. While watching You've got Mail it made me think about all these systems we use to communicate with one another and how we have really become dependant on e-mail. At Westminster alone we use e-mail to cancel classes, to keep us updated with what's going on, to ask for help, to schedule appointments, and much more. I never realized how much we use e-mail, the internet, the web or whatever it is we use but it has become a part of our everyday life. I remember earlier in our class we talked about how people would rather chat or text than have a normal conversation. I have one question for myself and everyone else; Can we survive without this modern technology that we have become so dependant on? In the movie they each ran to some computer to check their e-mails. I have realized that I 'm the same way when it comes to checking myspace or facebook. I have recently found myself browsing the web a lot more and being really into the whole myspace thing. When I was watching the movie I thought about myspace because we recieve messages and request to be friends with people we don't know. I know for a fact that some people who use myspace go back and forth with messages so it's just like reciving mail through a regular e-mail company. It amazes me how technology has changed over the years and how it's continuing to grow. Not only that when You've Got Mail came out the whole internet thing was just starting to sky rocket but now internet dating and chatting is way different and a lot more safe. I'm still indifferent about it and not really sure how I feel.

I was thinking about how much AOL and the internet has changed as well. Like I remember back in the olden days when we first AOL because it was the most popular internet provider, that they had easily accessible chat rooms on the opening page. I don't have AOL anymore, so I don't really know if they are still there or not. But it was just so intriguing that you could talk to a bunch of people in one spot, even people from another country. My mom even got on chat rooms a couple of times. I think the popularity of chat rooms has died down a bit since that time, I guess they're not as necessary now with the new pages like MySpace and Facebook. But what is better? Talking to someone, even if it is over the internet, and learning things about them as you talk. Or just signing onto their MySpace page and learning everything you would want to know about them without even asking.
