Left Behind in technology
As I was reading for this class I discovered that everyone hasn't had the chance to expriment using computers or the internet. What caught my attention even more is that some people have never used a telephone before in their life. Where as for us, some of us can't live without a phone especially our cell phones. But we are so caught up in our own lives that we don't stop to think about those people who can't afford a phone yet a lone a cell phone. I know I didn't think about that until I read because my cell phone is my best friend when I don't have my cell phone I feel lost. Don't get me wrong there were times when I couldn't afford a cell phone but I still didn't think about those people who have never had a phone period. At least if we don't have a cell phone whe had our house phones to depend on. The next thing that caught my eye when I was reading was the fact the people don't have computers or the internet becuase they can't afford it. I guess I never really paid attention to how much computers or the internet cost because I hadn't had to buy either one of those things. When I came to college it was then when I realized how exspenive computers and laptops are. Up until the reading the price of having the internet never occured to me. Once again we are so caught up in our lives and cultures that we don't realize that there are people out there that have never came across those things. Because we don't think or even pay attention we forget about everbody else or assume that everbody is on the same page as we are. Then we come to find out that everbody is not up to date as we are. What makes this whole CMC thing more interesting to me is that in one of my other classes we are currently attempting to work with a gruop of girls from Kenya and it's been a task because they don't have internet access the way that we do. So it takes a while for them to respond which makes this a difficult task but also creates a great learning experince. With that being said it goes to show how around the world everybody isn't up to date and how they can't afford to be.

It is sad to think what we take for granted...having 24 hour access to the world via the internet...is what other people affected poorly by the digital divide would probably give anything to have available once a week! Also, as countries such as the US develops more and more technology...it will become even more challenging for third world countries to catch up to where we stand. It's kind of like a slippery slope... the poor countries are going to find it more challenging to survive as technology continues to progress.
